Jimmie Bones & The Howling Diablos rev up for work
Sunday nights at the Bear's Den in Berkley were once a local rock institution.

From 1995-2001, funk-rock group The Howling Diablos performed as the house band at the now-closed club, and throngs of clubgoers packed the venue every Sunday to dance, jam with the band and let loose before the work week began. It wasn't unusal to see some high-wattage guest starts, including Kid Rock.

Now the Diablos (Tino Gross, Mike Smith, Mo Hollis, Johnny Evan and Johnny Bee) with guest keyboardist Jimmy Bones (Twisted Brown Trucker) are resurrecting some of that sunday night energy at
Dino's in Ferndale.

"This has a whole new vibe. It's really starting to band," says vocalist Tino Gross. "It's a lot of fun and it's good to be playing."

"We had the entire horn section from the O'Jays show up Easter Sunday. It was really something," he adds.

The group is gearing up to records a new album. "The best thing for us is to go play and test out the new material," Gross says.

Live & Kicking It - by Brian McCollum - Detroit Free Press
Kid Rock "Live Trucker"
They don't make live albums like they used to, and that's not all bad. The rock concert record has served a variety of ignoble aims over the years, whether acting as a quick fix during creative doldrums or as a cheap way to pick fans' wallets.

But back when the concert album was a staple of the rock livelihood, it also wielded major power: The right release could make a career (Peter Frampton), reignite one (Bob Seger), or serve as a lasting artistic statement (the Who).

If anyone on the modern landscape has been primed for that old-school brand of live album, it's Kid Rock. Since crashing the pity party of post-grunge in the late '90s, the Detroit star and his Twisted Brown Trucker band have happily indulged in onstage anachronisms galore -- loud guitar solos, loud wardrobes, even louder pyrotechnics.

That flair for showmanship has made Rock one of the rare and deserved success stories of today's concert world. But it's the same thing that keeps his new "Live Trucker" from joining the pantheon of classics -- a group that includes Seger's "Live Bullet," the 1976 record that was Rock's model in both shape and spirit. The visual punch so crucial to his performances may not translate onto DVD, let alone a music CD.

Recorded almost entirely at Detroit shows in 2000 and 2004, "Live Trucker" does feature moments that capture Rock's arena-sized oomph. Opening track "Son of Detroit," one of the few newer tunes here, rides a growling, high-energy groove that reappears mostly on the older stuff -- well-traveled rap-rock blasts such as "Bawitdaba," "Cowboy" and "Devil Without a Cause," featuring late mini-MC Joe C.

The 14-track record slows just once, with the mid-album placement of "Picture," cut in '04 with a pre-platinum Gretchen Wilson on rich duet vocals and a capacity Cobo Arena crowd as a full-bodied backing choral group.

The vintage material is performed by the five-piece Trucker with a comfy tightness that comes from years on the road, without the loss of intensity that can come from years of road weariness. Organist Jimmy Bones, the band's stealth musical spine, is wisely kept atop the mix, but it's Kid Rock's voice -- undoubtedly treated to some friendly studio massaging -- that inevitably leads the affair.

"Live Trucker, isn't the next "Live Bullet"; it simply doesn't bear the sort of musical expressiveness and edge-of-abandon passion that made the latter an instant classic. But for Kid Rock's core fans -- especially the hometown folks who dependably sell out his multiple-night stands -- "Live Trucker" stands as a worthy snapshot, certain to rouse nostalgia for countless lively nights gone by. In stores now.

Kid Rock "Live Trucker" (Atlantic) In-Stores 2.28.06
Kid Rock wears his affection for the good ol' days with the same pride he wears his trademark fedora and wife-beater undershirt.

So leave it to him to resurrect the concept of the live album, those concert keepsakes that have been a record industry mainstay since the 1960s but have been all-but-forgotten in today's musical landscape.

It's not that live albums have completely gone away. But bare-bones concert recordings have largely fallen out of vogue in the DVD era, as many modern live sets are now packaged as DVDs with the album accompaniment included as something of an afterthought.

Not Rock's "Live Trucker," which is almost defiant in its minimalism. Rock has built his rep on his muscular live show, and that's what he stands by here; a sticker on the CD's cover brags, "Contains no bonus tracks, no exclusive footage, no remixes. Does include actual live performances & real music."

Bells and whistles (or noted lack thereof) aside, "Live Trucker" -- recorded mostly during Rock's three-night stand at DTE Energy Music Theatre in August 2004 -- is a rowdy, randy love letter to Detroit, a thank-you to Rock's hometown fans that's destined to become a local backyard barbecue and tailgating classic. The numerous shoutouts to Michigan and Detroit will make any Detroiter gush.

"Live Trucker" is quite obviously fashioned after Bob Seger's landmark 1976 "Live Bullet" album. The covers of both albums feature red-tinted art and utilize similar tilted fonts, and both contain 14 tracks that capture Detroit-bred performers at the pinnacle of their careers.

But just as "Live Bullet" wasn't simply a one-man show, "Live Trucker" also is a testament to the strength, power and growth of Rock's Twisted Brown Trucker backing band, especially keyboard maestro Jimmie Bones, whose ivory-tickling peppers tracks like album-opener "Son of Detroit" and "Rock N' Roll Pain Train."

Licensing rights make it impossible (or at least ridiculously pricey) for the full Kid Rock experience to be accurately captured on disc; part of the fun of Rock's shows is hearing TBT run through snippets of "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," "Walk This Way" and the like. There's none of that here, but in their place are a warm rendition of "Picture" featuring Gretchen Wilson, an extended version of "Cowboy" complete with a bluesy three-minute intro, and what may as well be the definitive version of "Early Mornin' Stoned Pimp."

For all that precedes it, it's too bad the album ends on a bum note, with the throwaway sound-check recording "Outstanding." Rock can do many things -- Southern rock, country, hip-hop, et al. -- but "Outstanding" proves Prince-like funk is slightly beyond his repertoire.

And while Rock's efforts to bring back the live album in a sparse presentation are appreciated, a DVD would have been a nice touch, as those audible flashes of pyro only serve to remind listeners Rock's show is a visual stunner, as well. (Plus, it's a shame for the hard work of those scantily clad dancers to go to waste.)

But for the fans on the left, right and all the way back on the hill, this set is cause for celebration. As Rock says on "Cocky," "it ain't bragging if you back it up," and Rock more than backs it up on "Live Trucker."
